Getting creative with abstracts
I recently signed up to an ArtHouse Jersey short painting course in 'Modern Abstract Landscapes' with Rob Allen, a fabulous local artist.
This was a complete contrast to my day job as a digital designer, where I need to be pixel perfect, precise and accurate. I had to loosen up and let go! I felt completely out of my comfort zone here.
I used to paint regularly but it's been 3 years since my art supplies have made it out the cupboard, so I was a bit rusty to say the least.
The course was attended by people of all ages, backgrounds and abilities. Rob took us through his process, first by 'making marks' on a piece of paper, covering up the white paper with paint applied with a sponge. Then we used a frame to pick out sections we liked. Quick 5 minute sketches were added over the top whilst sat outdoors at Greve de Lecq beach. Then returning to the Barracks, we each used these to attempt a large abstract painting.
I wasn't too fond of my first attempt, so started over again at home and Rob's guidance inspired me to produce an artwork that I'm now quite pleased with. I might even frame it!
